The Dark Side of Relationship Pursuit PDF
By:Brian H. Spitzberg,William R. Cupach
Published on 2014-04-16 by Routledge

Awards and Praise for the first edition: Recipient of the 2006 International Association for Relationship Research (IARR) Book Award |This text, as it presently stands, is THE go-to text for stalking researchers. That is my opinion and the opinion of multiple fellow scholars I know in the field. It rarely sits on my shelf, but rather is a constant reference on my desk. I can always count on these authors to have done an extensive review of literature. I thought I was thorough, but they are always providing me with new references.| --Dr. H. Colleen Sinclair, Associate Professor of Psychology, Mississippi State University |Cupach and Spitzberg provide the reader with a multidisciplinary framework for understanding the nature and impact of unwanted relationship pursuits. This book is an excellent resource for students and professionals alike who seek to gain knowledge about unwanted relational pursuits and stalking.| —Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy The Dark Side of Relationship Pursuit provides historical and definitional frames for studying unwanted relationship pursuit, and considers the role of the media, law, and social science research in shaping today’s conceptualizations of stalking. The volume integrates research from diverse contributing fields and disciplines, providing a thorough summary and assessment of current knowledge on stalking and obsessive pursuit. Building on the foundation of the award-winning first edition, this revision considers assessment issues, offers an expanded analysis of the meta-analysis data set, and includes coverage of intercultural and international factors. As an increasing number of scholarly disciplines and professional fields study stalking and other forms of obsessive relationship pursuit, this book is a must-have resource for examining interpersonal conflict, social and personal relationships, domestic violence, unrequited love, divorce and relational dissolution, and harassment. It also has much to offer researchers, counselors, and professionals in psychology, counseling, criminal justice, sociology, psychiatry, forensic evaluation, threat assessment, and law enforcement.

Development and Vulnerability in Close Relationships PDF Free

Development and Vulnerability in Close Relationships PDF
By:Gil G. Noam,Kurt W. Fischer
Published on 2013-06-17 by Psychology Press

How do people develop in their important relationships? How do two people come together to form a new, close relationship? How do relationships affect or determine who we are and who we become? These questions should be central to the study of mind and development, but most researchers neglect relationships and focus instead on analyses of individuals, as if people were basically alone, experiencing occasional fleeting moments with other people. Research based on this individualist assumption has dominated the behavioral and clinical sciences, but there are other voices, and they are growing. In this book, many of the scholars who are moving relationships and attachments back to the center of human development outline their central concepts, findings, and perspectives. People are fundamentally social, and relationships are part of the fabric of being human, forming an essential foundation that molds each person's mind and action. A mind does not reside in one person but in relationships and communities, composed of many people's interconnected minds, which mutually support and define each other. From the start and throughout life, each person develops strengths and vulnerabilities in important relationships in communities and cultures. Those relationships are so central to each person's activity and experience that without them, no scientific explanation can even begin to analyze mind and action. There is no mind without other people. There is no psychological vulnerability that does not involve others. The contributors to this book aim to establish a firm foundation for the role of relationships in human activity and health and to promote strong research by bringing together in one place most of the best research and theory on development and relationships. Their goal is to stimulate a more radical inclusion of relationships in mind, an ecological focus on the ways that relationships constitute action, feeling, and thought.

The Mate Relationship PDF Free

The Mate Relationship PDF
By:Anne Maydan Nicotera
Published on 1997-01-01 by SUNY Press

This book presents research applications of a rules theory of mate relationships of several American cultures and two non-American cultures. The theory is summarized in seven basic propositions, several of which have been previously tested and supported. The research contained here expands the depth of the work by examining attributes and levels of mateship in several American co-cultures, one Caribbean culture, and one Asian culture, and extends the breadth of the work by moving into the areas of relational quality, maintenance, and conflict. Seven propositions presented are 1) perceived self-concept support is the basis of interpersonal attraction; 2) different types of perceived self-concept support are the basis for different types of interpersonal relationships; 3) different types of self-concept support are the basis for entry into and increasing intensity of interpersonal relationships; 4) the type and form of self-concept support is homogeneous by culture; 5) conflict which threatens self-concept support on crucial relationship variables--the lack of it or attacks on it--is the most potentially dangerous type of conflict in interpersonal relationships; 6) negotiation of differences in perceptions of self-concept support on crucial relationship variables cements interpersonal relationships; and 7) quality interpersonal relationships consist of intimacy, personal growth, and effective communication on the crucial relationship variables.

Intimate Relationships covers both classic and current material in a concise yet thorough and rigorous manner. Chapters range from attraction to love, attachment to jealousy, conflict to relationship dissolution — all written in a warm, personal, and engaging voice. Each chapter is organized around the major issues and relevant theories, in addition to a critical evaluation about the research. When appropriate, the authors discuss and evaluate popular ideas about relationship processes in the context of scientific research. This includes critical evaluations of evolutionary approaches to attraction, victim-based accounts of abuse, and the separate-cultures view of the sexes.

Chemical Dependency and Intimacy Dysfunction PDF Free

Chemical Dependency and Intimacy Dysfunction PDF
By:Bruce Carruth,Edmond J Coleman
Published on 2014-04-04 by Routledge

The failure to deal with social-sexual issues may impair the progress of recovery in a chemically dependent individual and his or her family. The failure to deal with sexual compulsivity in intravenous drug abusers may seriously impair our ability to deal with AIDS. The failure to deal with chemical dependence may render family therapy ineffective in the treatment of sex offenders. Despite the connection between chemical dependency and intimacy dysfunction, the intimacy concerns are rarely recognized in the diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare of the chemically dependent person and his or family. In this pioneering work, experts in the fields of chemical dependence and human sexuality provide professionals with information and skills to deal with intimacy dysfunction issues--offering hope for improving treatment and rehabilitation of chemically dependent individuals and their families. Typical intimacy dysfunctions are explored, as well as treatment methods and strategies that have proven to be effective. A valuable resource guide, this comprehensive volume addresses the key issues in the multidisciplinary approach to the study of chemical dependency and intimacy dysfunction.

ACT and RFT in Relationships PDF Free

ACT and RFT in Relationships PDF
By:JoAnne Dahl,Ian Stewart,Christopher Martell,Jonathan S Kaplan
Published on 2014-01-02 by New Harbinger Publications

Even if you are not a couples therapist, chances are you have dealt with clients whose problems are based in relationship issues. In order to successfully treat these clients, you must first help them understand what their values are in these relationships, and how their behavior may be undermining their attempts to seek intimacy and connection. Combining elements of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and relational frame theory (RFT), ACT and RFT for Relationships presents a unique approach for therapists to help clients develop and experience deeper, more loving relationships. By exploring personal values and expectations, and by addressing central patterns of behaviors, therapists can help their clients establish and maintain intimacy with their partner and gain a greater understanding of their relationship as a whole. ACT is a powerful treatment model that teaches clients to accept their thoughts, identify their core values, and discover how these values are extended to their relationships with others. RFT focuses on behavioral approaches to language and cognition, and can help clients identify their own expectations regarding relationships and how they might communicate these expectations with their loved ones more effectively. This book aims to shed light on the thought processes behind intimate relationships—from the attraction phase to the end of intimacy—from a functional, contextual perspective.

Processes of Animal Memory (PLE: Memory) PDF Free

Processes of Animal Memory (PLE: Memory) PDF
By:Douglas L. Medin,William A. Roberts,Roger T. Davis
Published on 2014-05-09 by Psychology Press

Originally published in 1976, this volume contains new and original contributions of the time addressed to a related set of ideas concerning processes of memory in animals. The theme is that animals remember and that theories of animal learning must take this into account as well as the coding processes that have been assumed to be specific to human beings. The focus of the book is on processes, and some progress is reported in differentiating types of memory. The emphasis in applying animal work to studies of human memory is made not in terms of paradigms but in terms of processes implicated via performance in a variety of tasks. Also, many of the chapters reflect the usefulness of applying a memory framework to a variety of |nonmemory| paradigms. This work will be essential reading for all those interested in animal as well as human memory, and provided the most up to date and broadest examination of animal memory processes at the time, from both a theoretical and conceptual framework.

Contemporary Theories and Systems in Psychology PDF
By:Benjamin B. Wolman
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

Twenty years is a long time in the life of a science. While the historical roots of psychology have not changed since the first edition of this book, some of the offshoots of the various theories and systems discussed have been crit ically reexamined and have undergone far-reaching modifications. New and bold research has led to a broadening of perspectives, and recent devel opments in several areas required a considerable amount of rewriting. I have been fortunate in the last fifteen years to have worked with about 2,000 psychologists and other behavioral scientists who contributed to several collected volumes I have edited. As the editor-in-chief of the In ternational Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Neurol ogy, I have had the privilege of reading, scrutinizing, and editing the work of 1,500 experts in psychology and related disciplines. In addition, I have written several books and monographs and over one hundred scientific papers. Armed with all that experience, I have carefully examined the pages of the first edition. Chapter 8 required substantial rewriting and several new sections have been added to other chapters: |Current Soviet Psychol ogy| (Chapter 2, Section 7); |New Ideas on Purposivism| (Chapter 5, Sec tion 4); |Recent Developments in the Sociological School of Psychoanalysis| (Chapter 9, Section 4); and |Present Status of Gestalt Psychology| (Chapter 12, Section 4). Chapter 15 was omitted, and two new chapters were added: Chapter 14 (|Humanistic Psychology|) and Chapter 16 (|Selected Research Areas|).
